Insufficient iron levels

Biologically, insufficient iron levels may affect the two first steps of thyroid hormones synthesis by reducing the activity of thyroid peroxidase enzyme, depending on iron. Thyroid peroxidase contributes to the chemical actions that bind iodine to tyrosine (an amino-acid) to produce T4 and T3. Low iron levels decrease the activity of another enzyme, the deionidase, needed to the conversion of T4 in T3, altering and reducing in proportion this conversion. Additionally, low iron levels can increase circulating concentrations of TSH. At last, adrenal gland production of cortisol needs good levels of iron. Thus, low iron levels may potentially reduce circulating concentrations of cortisol and contribute to adrenal fatigue.
